Key Takeaways:
  • On the same $30 Bella+Canvas 3001 tee, a creator keeps about $17.08 on Fourthwall and $16.91 on Shopify with Printful. Fourthwall lists the shirt from $11.75; Printful lists it at $11.92; both charge 2.9% + $0.30 on US cards
  • Sell 500 of them in November and Fourthwall's Free plan pays out about $8,540. Shopify Basic billed monthly ends near $8,416 after its $39 plan fee. The gap is $124
  • The bigger difference is legal, not arithmetic. Fourthwall says it is the merchant of record and registers, collects and remits sales tax for you. On Shopify you are the seller; Shopify Tax calculates the tax, and its help center tells merchants to make sure they file and remit correctly
  • Both connect to YouTube Shopping. Pick Fourthwall to sell merch without becoming a retailer; pick Shopify when you already run a retail business and want to own every part of it
Five weeks before Black Friday is when creators decide where this year's merch drop will live. The two names that come up most are Fourthwall, built for creators, and Shopify, built for everyone. Their pricing pages argue opposite cases. Fourthwall leads with a $0 plan. Shopify leads with the best checkout in commerce. We read both live pricing pages on October 21, 2026, priced the same blank shirt on each fulfillment catalog, and opened the tax pages each one links from its fine print. We did not run a store on either platform. Fourthwall is cheaper for a creator selling print-on-demand merch, by a small margin, and it removes sales tax filing entirely. Shopify costs slightly more and makes you the retailer, which is a feature only if you want to be one.

Sources: Fourthwall pricing, Fourthwall's custom t-shirt catalog, Printful's Bella+Canvas 3001 page, Shopify pricing, and YouTube's list of supported shopping platforms, all read October 21, 2026. On a $30 Bella+Canvas 3001 tee, Fourthwall leaves the creator about $17.08 and Shopify with Printful leaves about $16.91, before Shopify's monthly plan fee. The 17-cent difference is the gap between the two catalogs' base prices. Fourthwall's model is simple: the catalog base cost comes off your selling price, and its pricing FAQ puts it plainly with a $10 shirt sold at $22 for $12 of profit. The Bella+Canvas Unisex Supersoft T-Shirt is listed "From $11.75." Card processing is 2.9% + $0.30, which Fourthwall's page notes is the same rate as Shopify's. On Shopify, print-on-demand comes from an app. Printful's Shopify integration is free to install, and its product page lists the same 3001 shirt at $11.92. Shopify Basic's standard US online card rate is also 2.9% + $0.30.
Two stacked bars comparing a $30 shirt: on Fourthwall, $11.75 base cost, $1.17 card processing and $17.08 kept; on Shopify with Printful, $11.92 base cost, $1.17 card processing and $16.91 kept
Two simplifications keep the comparison fair. We assume the buyer pays shipping, which both platforms pass through, and we apply the card fee to the shirt price only. Processing is charged on the full order total on both platforms, so the effect is the same on each side. Base prices are "from" figures for standard sizes; 2XL and up cost more on both. At 500 shirts sold for $30 each, Fourthwall's Free plan pays out about $8,540 and Shopify Basic billed monthly about $8,416, a gap of $124 for the month. Billed yearly, Shopify's plan drops to $29 and the gap narrows to $114.

That is the whole fee story, and it is smaller than either company's marketing suggests. A creator choosing between these two on price alone is choosing over roughly 1% of revenue. The choice that actually changes your November is the next one. Fourthwall is the merchant of record for everything sold in a creator's shop, so it calculates, collects and remits sales tax and VAT, and the creator reports only their payouts as income. On Shopify the creator is the merchant, and registering, filing and remitting remain the creator's job. Fourthwall's creator tax help article says it collects sales tax at checkout based on the customer's shipping address and remits it to state tax authorities. Its FAQ extends that to nexus registration and to other countries. On Fourthwall, five hundred shirts shipped across the country become a payout and a line on your income taxes. Shopify does a lot of the work and none of the liability. Shopify Tax calculates rates at checkout and is free up to $100,000 of US sales. For stores created on or after May 13, 2026, that $100,000 is a lifetime threshold rather than an annual one. After it, Basic, Grow and Advanced stores pay 0.35% per order, capped at $0.99. Shopify's own help center reminds merchants to ensure they file and remit correctly, because the store, and the obligation, belong to you.
Two flows side by side: on Fourthwall, a buyer's order passes to Fourthwall, which collects and remits sales tax to states while the creator receives a payout; on Shopify, the order passes to the creator's store, and the creator files and remits to states
Customer support follows the same line. Fourthwall's pricing page says it handles support for catalog products. On Shopify, a late package or a wrong size is an email in your inbox. For a creator whose time is the scarcest input in the business, that is worth more than $124. Fourthwall sells memberships with a 5% fee on both plans and digital products with a 5% fee on Free and 0% on Pro. Shopify Basic has no built-in gated-content membership; that takes a third-party app with its own pricing. We did not price those apps for this comparison. Fourthwall Pro is shown at $15 a month on the pricing page, which is the yearly rate; Fourthwall's own plan comparison puts it at $19 monthly or $180 a year. Pro removes the digital product fee and adds shop credit and priority support. It does not lower merch costs, so a merch-only shop has no fee reason to upgrade. Our Fourthwall review covers the membership side in detail, and our Black Friday discount guide covers how holiday offers renew on membership platforms. Shopify is worth its cost when merch is one line in a real retail business: self-stocked inventory, wholesale, retail partners, or a catalog bigger than any print-on-demand menu. Its checkout, inventory tools and app ecosystem are the deepest available, as our Shopify review found. Being the merchant of record also has an upside. You own the customer relationship outright, choose any fulfillment partner, and can move the store's processor and apps as the business grows. Creators who already run supplements, apparel lines or physical products with their own inventory usually belong there. Fourthwall's 0% fee on self-sourced products narrows that case, but it does not give you Shopify's depth.
  • First merch drop, print-on-demand only: Fourthwall Free. No plan fee, no tax filing, no support inbox.
  • Merch plus memberships for an existing audience: Fourthwall. The 5% membership fee is half of Patreon's standard 10% for new creators, and it lives beside the shop.
  • A retail brand with stocked inventory or wholesale: Shopify Grow or Basic. You want to be the merchant.
  • Selling through YouTube Shopping: either. Both appear on YouTube's supported platform list.
  • Unsure: start on Fourthwall. A shop is easy to move; a sales tax registration is not easy to undo.
A shirt is a good product and a single purchase. Most fans buy one, maybe two, and the next sale depends on your next drop. That is the pattern we described in why creators are moving beyond merch, and it holds on either platform. Built by Foundry builds the recurring side of a creator business: a subscription product, often an app, built in about three weeks for $0 upfront on a revenue share. The creator owns the business, and App Store search brings in people who have never seen the shop. After launch we keep running and improving it, because our share depends on it continuing to earn. The merch stays, and becomes one more thing the product's members buy. Slightly. On a $30 Bella+Canvas 3001 shirt, Fourthwall leaves about $17.08 and Shopify with Printful about $16.91, and Fourthwall's Free plan has no monthly fee against Shopify Basic's $39 billed monthly. At 500 shirts a month the difference is about $124. Yes. Fourthwall's help center says it is the merchant of record for all products and memberships sold in a creator's shop. It calculates, collects and remits sales tax and VAT, and the creator reports only their payouts as income. Shopify Tax calculates sales tax at checkout and is free up to $100,000 of US sales, then 0.35% per order on Basic, Grow and Advanced, capped at $0.99 per order. The merchant remains the seller, and Shopify's help center tells merchants to ensure they file and remit correctly. Yes. YouTube's help page on connecting a store lists Fourthwall and Shopify among its supported shopping platforms, alongside Spreadshop and Spring. Fourthwall lists no percentage fee on catalog merch. Its catalog base cost is deducted from your selling price, you keep the markup, and US card processing is 2.9% + $0.30. Memberships carry a 5% fee on both plans.
