How creators are turning audiences into subscription businesses

Key Takeaways:
  • Blair Imani's Instagram showed 939K followers on October 21, 2026. Her TikTok showed 195,000 followers and 540 videos
  • In 2026 she was named to the TIME100 Creators list and ranked No. 1 on the Affinity 100, a list that ranks creators by audience engagement rather than size
  • Her Patreon reports 1,203 members, 389 of them paying, across six tiers from $2 to $40 a month. From $10 up, members enroll in a course built on her book
  • Of the 16 links on her link-in-bio page, four ask for support (Patreon, Ko-fi, Venmo, PayPal). The two merch links we tested were broken, and so was the shop link on her website
Blair Imani has one of the most engaged education audiences online. People pay her because they want to support her, not because a store sells them something, and that's the useful thing to study. With Election Day on November 3, her page is also busier than usual: the first link is for writing letters to voters, and the fifth is for registering. Blair Imani is an American author, historian, and educator, and the creator of Smarter in Seconds, a short-form video series she launched in 2020 that explains topics such as voting rights, cultural appropriation, and the economics of sexism in under a minute. She wrote three books with Penguin Random House imprints, including the Los Angeles Times bestseller Read This to Get Smarter. Wikipedia's profile records that she first drew national attention in 2016, when she was arrested while protesting the police shooting of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge. Smarter in Seconds later made her one of the best-known educators on Instagram. TIME's 2026 entry calls the series "perky, bite-sized, Webby-nominated," notes that her followers call themselves Smarties, and mentions the Ms. Foundation's Marie C. Wilson Award she received in May. She co-hosts the podcast Thoughts About Feelings with librarian Mychal Threets, and her YouTube channel adds 12K subscribers and 138 videos. The Affinity 100, released by Evan Shapiro and Shira Lazar in September, put her first, ahead of MrBeast at 85. The list scores how attached an audience is, not how big it is. That attachment is the asset a business would be built on. Blair Imani earns from speaking, consulting, book royalties, brand campaigns, and direct audience support. Her website lists talks at Oxford and Harvard and consulting for Meta and Sephora. Audience support runs through a six-tier Patreon at $2 to $40 a month, plus one-time tips on Ko-fi, Venmo, and PayPal. Here's everything a fan could pay for, checked on October 21, 2026.

Her Ko-fi page lists 97 supporters and a count of 457 coffees received. The book has been on sale since October 26, 2021, per its publisher. A link-in-bio page is the closest thing a creator has to a storefront. It's also where a business shows what it's actually asking for. Here is all of Imani's.
Blair Imani's link-in-bio page, laid out in three columns: Write letters with Vote Forward, Stop Segregation, DeleteMe, Thoughts About Feelings, Register to Vote, Smarter in Seconds Keychain, Support my work via Venmo, Ko-fi and PayPal, LGBTQ+ Healthcare Directory, Learn with me on Patreon, Read my books, What is the original name of the land I am on, Shop my Lip Collection, Visit my website, and Read my FAQ and Watch my TEDx Talk
Sort the 16 links and they fall into three piles. Nine point outward, to causes, tools, her podcast, and her own website; one of them, DeleteMe, carries her discount code. Four ask for support: three tip jars and Patreon. Three sell something: a keychain, a lip collection, and her books. Only the books link led to a working product page when we clicked through. The keychain page returned a 404. The lip collection link redirected to the homepage of a different creator business with no lip set on it. On her website, the shop button forwards to a Shopify store with this message:
A Shopify page reading This store is currently unavailable, with a box asking Are you the store owner, reached from the shop link on blairimani.com on October 21, 2026
None of this is unusual. Merch links break quietly because nobody gets an alert when a partner retires a product. That's exactly why the test is worth running. The link-in-bio test sorts every link on a creator's bio page into three piles: links that point elsewhere, links that ask for support, and links that sell a product. Then it clicks every link in the third pile. A creator whose working links all ask, and none sell, has an audience willing to pay and no product to pay for. Imani's page passes the willingness half easily. Hundreds of people pay her every month mostly to support her, and nearly a hundred more have tipped on Ko-fi alone. It fails the product half. Support is real money, but it rises and falls with how a supporter feels this month, and a tip repeats only if the supporter chooses to make it monthly. We ran a related check on Linktree's own pricing. The tool doesn't matter much. What matters is whether anything on the page renews. The one link that combines payment and product is labeled "Learn with me on Patreon." That wording matters. At $10 a month, the Student Smartie tier enrolls a member in a course based on Read This to Get Smarter.
Blair Imani's Patreon membership page showing three of six tiers: Supporter Smartie at $2 a month, Super Smartie at $5 with exclusive voting power, and Student Smartie at $10 a month, which enrolls members in the six month course based on Read This to Get Smarter
Above it, $15 adds early access to new Smarter in Seconds episodes, $25 adds downloadable posters, and the $40 Board of Smarties tier lets members request original content; it showed "Limited (29 remaining)." Patreon's public profile data puts her campaign at 1,203 members, 389 paying, with 133 posts since May 2020. Two details are worth noticing. The page calls the course "ongoing" and "five-month" in its summary and "six month" in the tier copy, which suggests it was built once and has been edited by hand since. And the cheapest tiers sell nothing except belonging. That's support. The $10 tier sells a sequence, and a sequence is a product. The ratio is the headline. 389 paying patrons out of 939K Instagram followers is about 0.04%. Even at the $2 floor, that's at least $778 a month before Patreon's fees, and we can't see the tier mix. For a creator ranked first in the country for audience attachment, the gap between attachment and revenue is the opportunity.

This is our sketch, not anything Imani has announced. Smarter in Seconds is already shaped like a daily lesson: one topic, under a minute, with a clear takeaway. An app would deliver one lesson a day in order, built on the chapters of the book, with a short check at the end so a learner knows it landed. Calendar units would open when the questions come in: how ballots get counted in October of an election year, Black History Month in February, Juneteenth in June. Her Super Smartie perk, voting on future lessons, would become a feature that every member uses instead of a reward at one tier. Education creators have built this before. Hank Green turned a study habit into Focus Friend, and J. Kenji López-Alt charges monthly for work still in progress while giving finished recipes away. If you're starting from a course, our guide to turning a course into a subscription app walks through the conversion. Patreon earnings on her page are private, so revenue figures here are floors, not estimates. We don't know her speaking or consulting income, book sales, or campaign fees. The paying-member count comes from Patreon's public profile data, and follower counts overlap across platforms. The broken links reflect what we saw on October 21, 2026; a partner store can come back online at any time. If you teach anything online and have 50K or more engaged followers, open your own bio page today. Count the links that ask, the links that sell, and the links that point somewhere else. Then click every link in the selling pile. If the working links are mostly tip jars, your audience is already telling you they'd pay. They just don't have anything to buy. Blair Imani's audience is among the most attached anywhere online, and her one working product is a course. Building that product out and running it is what Built by Foundry does, and keeping it growing after launch is the part most creators never get help with.
